CNN —After being dispatched in five games by the reigning champion Denver Nuggets, LeBron James spoke to the media about what’s next for the Los Angeles Lakers’ superstar. With his season once again coming to a premature end, James is looking forward to spending some time away from basketball. “I just want to get home to the family, honestly,” James said after the game. James, playing in his 21st season in the league, averaged 27.8 points across the five games along with 6.8 rebounds, 8.8 assists, 2.4 steals and one block. Despite the silver lining of an extended break from the sport, the summer won’t be one long vacation for James.

CNN —Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving said he “just didn’t fit” into the 12-man basketball roster selected to represent Team USA at the upcoming Olympic Games. Irving has twice enjoyed success with USA Basketball (USAB) – winning gold at the 2014 FIBA World Cup and the Rio 2016 Olympics – and had outlined his desire to once again be part of an Olympic roster. This year’s announcement process was certainly different, with USA Basketball managing director Grant Hill traveling across the country to personally deliver the Team USA jerseys to each player that was selected. Irving won a gold medal with Team USA at Rio 2016. The Opening Ceremony for the 2024 Paris Olympics will take place on July 26 with men’s basketball play beginning the following day.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Joel Embiid’s timeline to return to the Philadelphia 76ers is still unclear following knee surgery. His availability this summer for the U.S. Olympic team is just as murky. Kerr even hoped to meet up with Embiid -- out at least four weeks, likely much longer -- before the Warriors played the 76ers on Wednesday night. “Our fingers are crossed he’ll be healthy this summer and able to play,” Kerr said. “It looks like this summer would be a little bit of a last hurrah for some of the guys on the team,” Kerr said.

CNN —Draymond Green was left off Team USA’s provisional 41-man list for this summer’s Olympic Games due to the suspensions he’s received this season, USA Basketball executive director Grant Hill said Wednesday. Green was reinstated in the first week of January after serving a 12-game suspension. “But I think just in lieu of sort of what’s transpired this year, we made a decision to not have [Green] on this list with this particular point in time with the process. According to the NBA, Green had meetings with a counselor and has also on multiple occasions met with representatives from the league, the Warriors and the Players Association, and he will continue to do so throughout the season. Green is a two-time Olympic gold medalist, finishing atop the podium with Team USA at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.

CNN —Basketball star Brittney Griner was honored Friday with the WNBA Cares Community Assist Award – an honor bestowed on the Phoenix Mercury center for her off-the-court volunteer work. Griner has spent all of her WNBA seasons with the Mercury, winning a championship in 2014. Indiana’s Tyrese Haliburton got questions about the same topic more often than he could remember this summer: The money, the money, the money. There are players with bigger salaries, even players with larger extensions — for example, Boston's Jaylen Brown signed one that could be worth $304 million this summer. But for players like Haliburton, Edwards, Ball and Bane, this is a new chapter. Haliburton, Edwards, Ball and Bane will average about that much in annual salary for the foreseeable future starting in the 2024-25 season. Reigning NBA MVP Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers has told USA Basketball that he intends to play for them at the Paris Olympics, a person with knowledge of the matter said Thursday. Embiid became a U.S. citizen last year and could have also chosen to play for France — or even Cameroon, his homeland, if it qualified for the Paris Games. The U.S. will try for a fifth consecutive gold medal at Paris next summer. MANILA, Philippines (AP) — There will be no gold medal for the U.S. at this World Cup. Germany — the last unbeaten team left in the tournament at 7-0 — will play Serbia on Sunday (8:40 a.m. EDT) for the World Cup title. Serbia beat Canada in the first semifinal, getting to its second World Cup final in the last three tournaments; it lost 129-92 to the U.S. in the 2014 championship game. Germany had been 0-6 against the Americans in World Cup or Olympic competition, usually getting blown out in those games.
